Position
Sales & Investment Manager – Steel & Metals Division (Expat Successor Role)

Summary
A leading Japanese general trading company is seeking an experienced professional to manage its steel and metals business operations across the Americas. This position serves as the successor to a current expat and will play a critical role in sales and investment activities, including business development, M&A execution, and post-merger integration (PMI). Ideal candidates will have experience in the steel/metals industry and exposure to corporate M&A from a business operator’s perspective. Prior experience in a general trading company (sōgō shōsha) is highly valued. M&A advisory or brokerage-only backgrounds are not suitable.

Essential Duties

• Manage regional sales and distribution of steel products (primarily for automotive OEMs and construction materials)

• Lead investment and M&A activities, including deal sourcing, due diligence, negotiations, and PMI

• Collaborate closely with the Japan HQ, global group companies, and local partners in North America and Latin America

• Monitor and report on market trends, competitive intelligence (including Japan’s Big Five trading companies), and strategic growth opportunities

• Coordinate with HR (based in Chicago) and corporate functions (based in New York)

• Represent the company in key industry events, forums, and meetings to strengthen the business network

• Support long-term business expansion planning and local strategy execution

Working Hours, Working Style

• 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM (local time), Monday to Friday

• Hybrid or in-office work depending on location; regional travel required

• United States (exact location to be discussed; HR based in Chicago, Corporate HQ in NYC)

Qualifications

• 5–10 years of experience in steel/metals industry sales or business development

• Hands-on experience with M&A projects from a corporate perspective, including post-merger integration

• Prior experience in a Japanese general trading company preferred

• Business-level English required; Japanese language ability preferred but not mandatory

• Experience working with automotive OEMs or construction material sectors is a plus

• Strong cross-functional communication and coordination skills

• Open to candidates in their late 20s to 40s

• Self-driven, strategic thinker, and capable of working in a multicultural environment
