Product Development Engineer

Summary
Seeking to hire a Product Development Engineer to join their existing team of highly inspired engineers.  The Product Development Engineer will play a vital role of supporting research and development projects related to thermal media products (design, implementation, and improvement phases) and its applications in the label industry.  You will have the opportunity to apply your hands-on technical knowledge and skills, and problem-solving skills to continuously improve the efficiency of our operations and help the Industrial Media Solutions Group achieve its goal of ensuring successful delivery of high-quality products

Essential Duties

• Plans and executes research and development projects to manage the lifecycle of assigned thermal media products through the design, implementation, and improvement phases.  Applies technical expertise across two or more areas of specialization for product formulation, material sourcing, production process development, testing and quality. 
• Designs new and improved products by researching materials and processing methods and developing formulations to meet customer requirements and to support product continuous improvement activities.  Works with customers and internal teams to develop, test and implement new and improved products.  Adapts products and thermal media applications developed by corporate research and development teams for introduction into American markets.  Conducts patent investigations and prepares supporting documentation to secure patents.  Prepares experimental designs and conducts laboratory-scale testing and evaluation.  May conduct product validation internally and at customer sites.
• Researches, sources, and evaluates various categories of raw materials required for new products, product improvements and cost down projects.  Investigates material availability, quality, and cost, and analyzes materials to confirm their properties and characteristics.  Selects materials, recommends suppliers to Purchasing and participates in the vendor qualification process.
• Develops or modifies production processes associated with product development and innovation.  Defines equipment requirements and specifications, and reviews production techniques or methods.  Conducts production-scale and pre-mass production testing. Compiles and evaluates test data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process specifications.  Develops and recommends new process technologies to achieve cost effectiveness and improved product quality.  
• Investigates and determines the root cause and recommends countermeasures for production problems related to product formulation or production process design.  May review and evaluate recommended countermeasures developed by lower-level engineers.
• Prepares project plans and periodic reports on project progress and activities.  Executes project to plan and adjusts schedules, activities, and resources to achieve targets. Prepares and delivers presentations to management on project results and product recommendations.
• Normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work, general instructions on new assignments.
• May orient, train, assign and check the work of other employees and may be designated as "lead."
• Daily interaction with other Research and Development staff.  Regular interaction with Purchasing, Technical Support (QA/QC), Sales, Production, and Manufacturing Engineering staff. Occasional interaction with Vendors and Customers to discuss material/product requirements and test materials/products.  May represent functional area on task forces, requiring the need to gain cooperation and influence others.
• Works on moderately complex to complex issues of broad scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Selects methods and techniques for obtaining results.

Qualifications
​​​​​​​•    Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or related technical degree with 5-7 years experience in chemical research and development. At least 3 years experience must be in thermal media or a related industry using paper, silicone, and adhesive applications.
•    Thorough understanding of chemical engineering theory and principles of design. 
•    Excellent analytical, problem solving, organizational and detailed oriented skills. 
•    Ability to solve complex problems under pressure and within time constraints.
•    Experience preparing and presenting project plans and progress reports for senior management.
•    Experience working with R&D, Purchasing, QA/QC, Sales and Production staff to meet project timelines, project management skills.
•    Self-motivated, driven, promotes personal and group interaction, energetic, quick learner, innovative and eager to work in a team-based environment.
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills and presentation skills.
•    Strong analytical, problem solving, communication, project management and presentation skills.  Strong math skills. Intermediate to advanced skills in Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
•    Ability to work in a fast-paced, safety-conscious manufacturing environment.
