Business Japanese・Japanese Culture No.1

Biz 日本語(Business にほんご - Japanese)

日本文化(にほんぶんか - Japanese Culture) No.1

There are many Japanese expressions that are commonly used in Japanese business settings that are not often used in everyday conversation. This time we will introduce the two most used phrases.

① いつもお世話(せわ)になっております。
This is a common expression used in business emails or phone calls to convey gratitude while greeting someone. It is typically used when contacting business partners or colleagues with whom you already have some familiarity. When using it in person, it’s appropriate to bow while saying this phrase.

② お疲れ様(おつかれさま)です。
This phrase is used exclusively at the end of work. If you’re leaving work before your coworkers, you will say “お疲れ様(おつかれさま)でした、お先に失礼(おさきにしつれい)します” to your coworkers. At the same time, they will say “お疲れ様(おつかれさま)です” to you. Japanese culture places great importance on politeness and consideration, and this greeting reflects that.
