Position
Purchasing Manager

Summary
A leading food company is seeking an experienced Purchasing Manager to lead our procurement operations. This role is responsible for developing cost-effective strategies, sourcing and negotiating with vendors, and supervising the purchasing team. The ideal candidate will ensure product quality, timely procurement, and strong supplier relationships, driving efficiency and continuous improvement across all procurement processes.

Essential Duties
Strategy & Team Leadership

• Develop and implement purchasing strategies to establish cost-effective and efficient procedures aligned with business goals.
• Supervise, mentor, and support the purchasing team; monitor performance, providing guidance and constructive feedback.
• Stay current with procurement technologies, market trends, import/export regulations, and trade compliance issues.
• Lead the adoption of new tools and systems to improve procurement efficiency.

Sourcing & Vendor Management

• Source, negotiate, and communicate with new and existing vendors to expand the product portfolio, including trending and in-demand items.
• Identify and select prospective suppliers, negotiating favorable pricing and contractual terms.
• Build and maintain strong, long-term supplier relationships.
• Conduct market research and evaluate vendor performance based on pricing, quality, delivery accuracy, and timeliness.

Procurement & Inventory Operations

• Review and process purchase orders accurately and in a timely manner.
• Coordinate with department managers to monitor inventory levels, determine supply needs, and place orders to avoid shortages or overstock.
• Schedule and monitor all deliveries to ensure timely and complete fulfillment.
• Maintain and analyze records of supplier receiving times, quality, and quantities to optimize procurement decisions.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

• Ensure the quality of all procured items; promptly resolve any issues related to product defects, delays, or discrepancies.
• Coordinate new product tastings and evaluations during meetings.
• Participate in semiannual inventory counts (may occur on a weekend).
• Attend company events and functions outside of normal working hours as required.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
​​​​​​​Experience & Knowledge

• 2+ years of purchasing experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
• Experience in the Japanese food distribution industry.
• Intermediate mathematical skills (profit margin calculations, markups, discounts, inventory counts, weight/measurement conversions).
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Knowledge of ERP systems (Sage, AS400, or Microsoft Business Central highly preferred).
• Knowledge of Japanese foods, non-food items, and liquors.

Skills & Abilities

• Business-level fluency in both English and Japanese (reading, writing, speaking, listening).
• Excellent leadership, mentoring, and people management skills.
• Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to adapt to frequent changes in assignments and workload.
• Must maintain a positive and professional attitude.

Other Requirements

• Must be willing and able to travel frequently for business.
• Must be ableto pass the Sake Adviser course within one year of employment.
