Engineering Manager – Gear Applications

Summary
We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the design and development of gear applications. The role focuses on the creation and optimization of gear systems, particularly for automotive gearboxes, including motor selection, gear integration, and torque transmission. This position requires an individual who can take a holistic approach to gear applications, designing systems that are efficient, quiet, compact, and lightweight. The ideal candidate will have experience with gear mechanisms and their integration into broader mechanical systems, including motors and torque systems.

Essential Duties

• Lead gear application design: Drive the design and optimization of gear systems and gearboxes, focusing on motor integration, gear mechanisms, and torque transmission systems for automotive and consumer electronics.
• Innovative design for noise reduction and miniaturization: Lead efforts to reduce noise and vibrations in gear systems while also focusing on minimizing system size and weight. Design lightweight, efficient gearboxes using a combination of materials, including metals and plastics.
• Customer collaboration: Work closely with Tier 1 automotive clients to understand their needs and translate those needs into high-performance gear systems.
• Component integration: Oversee the selection of motors, gear components, and housing designs, ensuring seamless integration into gearboxes and other mechanical systems.
• Cross-functional leadership: Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and product teams to ensure that gear applications meet performance, cost, and durability requirements.
• System-level design: Take a system-level approach to gear design by considering how the gear system works with motors, torque systems, and related components to deliver optimal performance in a wide range of applications.
• Mentorship and team management: Lead and mentor a team of engineers, providing technical guidance and fostering a collaborative environment that supports innovation and professional growth.
• Innovation and future planning: Evaluate emerging technologies and materials to incorporate into new designs and stay ahead of industry trends. Contribute to long-term strategic planning for product development.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Experience:
  • At least 5-7 years of experience in gear application design or related mechanical systems design, especially for automotive or consumer electronics.
  • Proven track record in designing gearboxes, torque systems, and integrating motors into mechanical systems.
  • Experience working with Tier 1 automotive clients or in customer-facing roles in the automotive or consumer electronics sectors.
  • Familiarity with noise reduction techniques, lightweight design, and the use of advanced materials such as plastics in mechanical applications.
  • Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, CATIA, ANSYS, etc.) and mechanical simulation tools.
• Skills:
  • System-level thinking: Ability to consider the entire gear application system, including motor integration, torque, and noise/vibration reduction.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to lead a team and work effectively across functional groups.
  • Fluent in Japanese and English; bilingual ability is highly preferred.
• Other:
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to innovate in mechanical design.
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high standards of quality and performance.
