Risk Manager

Summary
A Japanese Manufacturer, located in Torrance, CA, is seeking a Legal/Risk Manager for a full-time on-site role. As a Legal/Risk Manager, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and implementing risk policies and processes for the company, overseeing the development of risk models covering market, credit, and operational risk. This position requires a hands-on approach to ensuring the effectiveness of controls, along with providing valuable research and analytical support. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional analytical skills, meticulous attention to detail, and a profound understanding of audit methodologies. Proficiency in both English and Japanese is essential for effective communication.

Essential Duties
Legal Duties and Responsibilities

• Collaborate with external lawyers to assess legal issues and implementation of legal strategies and standards.
• Perform and resolve complex legal matters for risk control.
• Serve as the primary legal counsel for the company's consolidated operations.
• Define internal governance policies.
• Monitor updates in laws and regulations.
• Manage legal budget.
• Conducts periodic compliance assessment if needed.
• Draft and review the legality of transactions, contracts, agreements, and joint ventures as necessary.
• Oversee Export Administration Regulation compliance for the corporation and subsidiaries.
• Manage vendor services, invoices, shared services to subsidiaries, and subscriptions.
• Provide support for visitor accommodations, including booking, scheduling, and attendance.

Risk Management Duties and Responsibilities

• Design and implement a comprehensive risk management process, including analyzing financial impacts when risks occur.
• Conduct risk assessments, analyzing current and potential risks affecting the company.
• Evaluate the company's previous handling of risks and compare potential risks against set criteria such as costs and legal requirements.
• Establish the company's willingness to take on specific levels of risk.
• Prepare risk management and insurance budgets.
• Tailor risk reporting to relevant audiences, educating the board of directors and business heads about significant risks.
• Explain external risks posed by corporate governance to stakeholders.
• Develop business continuity plans to mitigate risks.
• Implement health and safety measures and procure insurance.
• Conduct policy and compliance audits, liaising with internal and external auditors.
• Maintain records of insurance policies and claims.
• Review new major contracts or internal business proposals.
• Build risk awareness among staff through support and training within the company.

Qualifications
Education and Work Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or MBA in Risk Management, Legal, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of relevant experience is preferred.
• Ability to travel 2-3 times a year.
• Business proficiency in both English and Japanese.
• Strong analytical skills with meticulous attention to detail.
• Commercial awareness and understanding of broader business issues.
• Excellent planning and organizational skills.
• Effective communication and presentation skills.
• Experience and knowledge in business insurance or manufacturing operations are considered a plus.
