Payroll Manager (Japanese / English Bilingual)

Summary
A Japanese CPA firm is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to lead payroll operations and individual income tax services for clients. This is a client-facing role requiring strong leadership, tax expertise, and excellent communication skills. The firm offers a flexible hybrid work environment in Torrance, CA.

Essential Duties

• Oversee and manage full-cycle payroll processing for multiple clients, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations

• Prepare and review individual income tax returns (1040) and related filings for clients

• Lead tax equalization calculations and expatriate payroll adjustments

• Act as primary liaison with tax authorities and clients to resolve payroll and tax-related inquiries

• Supervise payroll staff and coordinate with other departments to ensure smooth payroll operations

• Review payroll reports and wage withholdings for accuracy and compliance

• Develop and maintain strong client relationships, providing exceptional customer service

• Maintain and improve payroll and tax processes and systems

• Ensure compliance with changing tax laws and regulations, staying current on industry developments

• Utilize payroll and tax software, as well as MS Office tools, to efficiently manage tasks

Additional Requirements

• CPA license is mandatory

• Ability to work onsite in Torrance as needed; hybrid work arrangement available (preferably one day per week onsite)

• Strong customer service skills and client communication abilities

• Experience with individual income tax and expatriate payroll is required

• This is a client-facing managerial role, not solely internal payroll processing

Working Hours
Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Hybrid or remote (hybrid preferred with at least one day in office per week)

Salary and Benefits
$80,000 - $95,000 annually (market-aligned salary range for Payroll Manager in CA)
